Spirituality at St James

At St James, we understand spirituality as the development of the “inner light” – the part of us that reflects, questions, connects and responds to the world around us.

We recognise that spirituality means different things to different people. As a Church of England school, we are rooted in Christian values, but we respect and celebrate all faiths and beliefs. All children and families are welcome at our school, including those who do not identify with any faith.

The Four Areas of Spiritual Development at St James

At St James, we use four simple ways to help children understand and develop their spirituality:

Looking In – Myself

We support children to develop self-awareness:

  • Understanding their feelings and emotions
  • Recognising what makes them unique
  • Taking time to reflect and be still

This may include quiet reflection, mindfulness or moments of calm during the school day.

Looking Out – Community

We encourage children to connect with others:

  • Showing kindness, empathy and forgiveness
  • Working together and building positive relationships
  • Understanding that they are part of a wider community

We help children to see that their actions can build strong connections with other.

Looking Around – The World

We inspire children to experience awe and wonder:

  • Appreciating nature and the environment
  • Noticing beauty in everyday life
  • Understanding their role in caring for the world

We encourage children to pause and say “wow” at the world around them.

 Looking Beyond – Big Questions

We create space for children to reflect on deeper questions:

  • What is the meaning of life?
  • What does love mean?
  • What do different people believe?

Children are supported to explore:

  • Christian beliefs and teachings
  • Other faiths and world views
  • Their own ideas and questions

This allows every child to make their own sense of the world in a respectful and thoughtful way.
