Maths
At St James Primary School we love maths and see it as an essential life skill. We are committed to ensuring that children have a positive and meaningful experience of mathematics throughout the school. We offer a curriculum that secures essential knowledge and skills whilst giving the children many opportunities to use and apply their mathematical skills across the curriculum, through real life problem solving and mathematical investigations.
Our curriculum is based on the principles of ‘Maths Mastery’ which means we focus on our pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject which then enables them to move on to more advanced material.
We deliver our mastery curriculum following the White Rose maths scheme. The White Rose schemes of learning are consistent with the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum and they have number at their heart. A significant amount of time is spent reinforcing number in order to build competency and ensure children can confidently access the rest of the curriculum. Children progress through the schemes as a whole group, encouraging students of all abilities to support each other in their learning. White Rose develops fluency, reasoning and problem solving, giving children the knowledge and skills they need to become confident mathematicians.
