Reading for Pleasure

At St James, we are determined for all our pupils to foster a lifetime love of reading. Our English Curriculum ensures our children are exposed to a diverse range of high-quality fiction and a non-fiction text which help our pupils develop their understanding of the world whilst recognising themselves in written texts. With a library filled with rich and interesting books, pupils are free to borrow resources to take home and enjoy which helps them to develop their independence and personal preferences. In each classroom, pupils have access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts with pupils sharing recommendations with one another leading to friendly debates, suggestions and a passion for books.

We have exclusive ‘Reading for Pleasure’ time in our school week, where pupils are given time to sink into their chosen book of choice.  We believe the combined elements of our considered curriculum and dedicated space and resources ensures pupils spend their primary years developing their love for the written word.
